When I used to think of working out, I would immediately feel my body recoil. I’m someone who doesn’t like going to the gym or going on runs, so I realized as I got to college that I needed to be more creative with the way I moved my body. What I’ve discovered are very “sneaky” and fun, engaging ways to kindly move my body!

If you’re also someone who isn’t really a “gym person,” check out these 5 surprisingly easy ways to move your body:

1) Take 5-minute “Mood Walk”:Tell yourself you’re just going around the block. Just five minutes of walking has proven to calms your nervous system, reduces anxious thoughts, and create mental space.Every bit of movement counts — and physical activity releases mood-boosting chemicals that help shake off stress.

2) Turn chores into micro-workouts: I used to really dislike house chores, but then I tried making them more fun by dividing them into mini workout or “party sessions” where I turn on the music and go full out with what I’m cleaning. So vacuum like you mean it. Carry laundry in two trips instead of one. Having the music on can help encourage you to keep going!

3) Take your calls on the move: When I have a call with one of my friends or loved ones, I try to walk around my neighborhood when I do it. Now, that I’ve started working, I also try to take my meetings on the move, if I can — you’d be surprised at how much more enjoyable the meetings are!

4) Schedule “Movement Snacks”: If you’re someone who dislikes working out, try “snacks” instead. This means short sessions (1-2 minutes) of stretching, squats, dancing, etc. These small bursts of movement throughout the day help regulate mood and prevent that yucky sluggish and stuck feeling.

5. Wake up or go to sleep with a song: I saved the best for last! I love to wake up to one of my favorite songs that allows me to move a little bit and get ready for the day, and right before I go to sleep, I like to dance off any extra energy I have in my body. I really enjoy doing the latter because if I’m feeling anxious, dancing helps release that. Plus, dancing has proven to reduce cortisol and boost endorphins. Plus, it’s impossible to overthink everything while dramatically lip-syncing!
