Tech Buddies is a student-led nonprofit organization co-founded by sisters Medha and Reshma in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. What began as a simple desire to help older adults navigate an increasingly digital world has grown into a thriving community program that provides free, in-person, one-on-one technology support to senior citizens. Today, Tech Buddies has supported more than 2,500 seniors across over 7 community sites while engaging more than 70 high school student volunteers in meaningful service and leadership opportunities.
The inspiration for Tech Buddies came from recognizing a growing challenge faced by many older adults. As technology became essential for everyday activities such as communicating with family, scheduling medical appointments, accessing online services, managing finances, and staying informed, many seniors found themselves struggling to keep up. Reshma and Medha noticed that older adults in their community often felt frustrated, isolated, or overwhelmed when trying to use smartphones, tablets, computers, and online platforms. Many seniors wanted to stay connected with loved ones but lacked the confidence or support needed to navigate rapidly changing technology. Seeing this need firsthand motivated the sisters to create a program that would provide patient, personalized assistance while fostering meaningful intergenerational relationships.
What started with just two dedicated founders helping seniors in their local community quickly gained momentum. Through partnerships with senior living facilities, community centers, and local organizations, Tech Buddies expanded its reach beyond a single location. As word spread about the positive impact of the program, more students became interested in volunteering and more community sites requested support. The organization steadily grew from a small local effort into a network serving seniors across more than 7 locations. This growth was fueled by the commitment of student volunteers, strong community partnerships, and the clear need for accessible technology education among older adults.
At the heart of Tech Buddies are its personalized teaching sessions. Unlike traditional classroom-style technology courses, Tech Buddies focuses on one-on-one support tailored to each senior’s unique needs and goals. During sessions, student volunteers sit alongside seniors and provide hands-on guidance in a comfortable, supportive environment. Volunteers help participants learn how to use smartphones, tablets, laptops, email, social media, online banking tools, healthcare portals, and other digital resources. Seniors can bring specific questions or challenges, and volunteers work patiently with them step-by-step until they feel comfortable and confident.
The sessions are designed to be welcoming and judgment-free. Student volunteers understand that everyone learns at a different pace, and they emphasize patience, encouragement, and clear communication. Whether helping someone send their first text message, join a video call with family members, organize digital photos, avoid online scams, or access important online services, Tech Buddies ensures that each senior receives individualized attention. These interactions often lead to meaningful conversations and intergenerational connections, creating environments that extend beyond technology instruction.
The impact of Tech Buddies extends far beyond digital literacy. For seniors, gaining confidence with technology means greater independence, improved access to resources, and stronger connections with family and friends. For student volunteers, the experience develops leadership, communication, problem-solving, and empathy skills while providing an opportunity to make a tangible difference in their community. The program creates a powerful two-way impact that benefits both generations.
Today, Tech Buddies continues its mission of closing the digital divide and building stronger communities through technology education. By empowering seniors with the skills they need to thrive in a digital world and inspiring high school students to become compassionate community leaders, the organization demonstrates how simple acts of service can create lasting change.
