“You Got The Spirit!” – An Uplifting Playlist

July 08, 2021

Defi “Salsa” U. (she/her/hers) was born and raised in Indonesia. She is a college graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering who’s passionately raising mental health awareness. Her passion for literature inspired her to write a winning essay in celebration of Indonesia’s Independence Day. Salsa does a lot of creative writing in her spare time, mostly, fiction. Working as part of a team has always excites her, and as such, Salsa had served in her student council for two periods back-to-back. As a natural-born leader, Salsa is eager to motivate others to grow and care for their wellbeing.

We’ve all been there, having *that* kind of day. You failed your test. You are surrounded by negative energy. Maybe, you were up all night doing school stuff, and the lack of sleep makes you feel groggy. All we ever want is to snuggle under the comfiest blanket, curl up in bed and perhaps have a crying session all day long, but then we realize we can’t.

That is when music comes to help. Music is indeed a powerful tool! Plug your earphones, pick out a song, blast it out, and boom! It can lighten your mood in a blink of an eye. Below are some of my favorite songs that I would play on repeat to shake those bad feelings off. I’ve compiled a bunch of my favorite uplifting songs into a Spotify playlist called “You got the spirit!” – be sure to check it out, and I hope this could help brighten up your days!

1.  Hair – Lady Gaga
I’ve had enough/ this is my prayer/ that I’ll die living just as free as my hair — This beautiful, powerful chorus will remind you that you can live just as free as your hair. You should never be ashamed of who you are! Personally, this is my favorite part: “I just wanna be free/ I just wanna be me/ And I want lots of friends that invite me to their parties/ Don’t wanna change, don’t wanna be ashamed/ I’m the spirit of my hair, it’s the glory that I bear.”

2.  Shake it Out – Florence + The Machine
This four-and-a-half-minute piece is a reminder to shake something out. Nothing should ever hold you back, not your past mistakes, your regrets, those dark thoughts that haunt you; none of them define who you are. Shake it out, shake it out, oh whoa/ And it’s hard to dance with a devil on your back/ So shake him off.

3. Fighter – Christina Aguilera
Although this song seems to be a getting-over-your-past-relationship kind of song, you can also listen to this song to boost your spirit up and remind yourself that everything that has happened in my life makes me that much stronger/ Makes me work a little bit harder/ Makes me that much wiser/ … Made me learn a little bit faster/ Made my skin a little bit thicker/ Makes me that much smarter/ So thanks for making me a fighter!

4.  Titanium – David Guetta ft. Sia
I’m bulletproof, nothing to lose/ Fire away, fire away/ Ricochet, you take your aim/ away, fire away/ You shoot me down but I won’t fall/ I am titanium. I guess this is a go-to affirmation song that everyone can relate to. No need for further explanation. I know the lyrics are pretty much self-explanatory, right?!

5.  This Is Me – Keala Seattle, The Greatest Showman Ensemble
To those who had watched this movie, remember when we all teared up when the casts sang this song? We all felt their emotions of years of resentment, feeling unloved, all the dark feelings one can handle before they finally accept themselves. Then it set them free. They eventually felt glorious because *there’s nothing I’m not worthy of*!

6.  Appreciated – Rixton
And this last song I recommended is especially for every one of you. I just want to let you know – thank you for always taking care of everybody else, lifting them up, just basically being there for them. They love and appreciate you for what you do so much, and I do, too. It’s time to let them take care of you. You need to let them help you because you are appreciated. “It’s just today, hey there’s tomorrow/ All things will change, hey that’s the motto.”
