In a world that often rushes past quiet moments, Let’s Listen dares to pause. It’s a movement rooted in the radical act of paying attention. Listening deeply to the stories that shape and connect us. Let’s Listen is a student-led initiative that aims to use storytelling as a way to boost community connection and raise awareness about mental health in the Fairfield, Ohio area.
Storytelling helps people express their true selves. This is important for starting meaningful conversations and for everyone feeling understood. Through community activities and online campaigns, Let’s Listen encourages people to speak honestly and listen with care. These moments of connection become chances to grow together. The idea for Let’s Listen first sparked when I was sitting outside the local library in Fairfield, Ohio.
An elderly man approached and asked about the book I was reading—it was The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store. He took that as a (much-wanted) invite to sit next to me and tell me about his day. I was ecstatic! I’ve always loved hearing stories from people. He told me he was coming from the retirement home across the street. I asked him how he liked it there. Before this day, I had actually never been inside it—even while living down the street. He said it can get isolating. The workers don’t have time to talk, and other residents are mostly uninterested. I vividly remember this statement he made: “Sometimes, you just need someone to talk to.”
That’s why Let’s Listen was created. Now, Let’s Listen visits retirement homes in Fairfield and Fairfield Township to host activities centered around storytelling. One recent event, “Mark Your Memory,” invited residents and youth volunteers from Fairfield High School to place stickers on printed maps and share stories tied to those locations. These could be fond memories, complaints, or quick comments. No matter what the story was, our volunteers were there to listen.
In one of our senior listening sessions, we heard many grievances about the lack of entertainment opportunities within the living situation. Residents were tired of playing bingo at the same time every day. So, we took what he heard into account and are currently hosting a Board Game & Puzzle Drive in partnership with Fairfield High School’s National Honor Society to donate to one of the retirement communities during the holidays.
Let’s Listen also gives back to the place where its story began. The initiative organizes book donations and drives for the local library in Fairfield, contributing more than 50 books to the community’s “little library” exchange. These efforts do not solely support literacy but also honor the spirit of sharing and connection that sparked the project in the first place.
Let’s Listen continues to focus on mental health and community connection. The team shares updates and resources on Instagram (@letslistenproject) and organizes events that encourage storytelling and support. What started as a local effort has become a consistent presence in Fairfield, helping teens and older adults feel heard. Let’s Listen keeps working toward its goal: making a place for storytelling to thrive in all spaces.
