Meera is a mental health activist from Los Angeles, CA. Her struggles with mental health cast a dark shadow over many of her experiences as a teenager and were compounded by the cultural shame she faced when seeking treatment as an Asian-Indian woman. The cultural stigma she endured is what fueled her passion for activism at the age of 14. Meera’s work focuses on mental health education, suicide awareness and prevention, and mental health policy. Her work has been recognized at a national level, when she was invited by President Biden and his administration to discuss the disparities in our nation’s mental healthcare system. On a grassroots level, Meera has spoken at mental health panels, conferences, seminars, and to members of government to share her story and propose new initiatives in mental health policy. Currently, Meera is a graduate student at UCLA studying mental health and public health. Meera’s mission is to change the narrative surrounding mental health and encourage people of all communities to get the help they need and deserve. She hopes to be a voice of hope to those who are struggling in silence. Meera wants you to remember: the world needs you here and it’s okay to not be okay.

The power of art in mental health healing lies in its ability to transcend traditional forms of therapy and communication, offering a unique avenue for myself to explore, express, and process my innermost thoughts and emotions. Whether it be drawing in my journal, singing my favorite song, or writing a poem, I was able to find solace, release, and empowerment.

Art fosters a sense of agency and control over my emotions, which empowers me to navigate my mental health journey with creativity and resilience. The tangible nature of art provides a visual representation of one’s experiences, serving as a catalyst for introspection, insight, and ultimately, healing.

Here are some different forms of art you can engage in:

  • Painting or drawing
  • Poetry
  • Learning to play an instrument
  • Singing
  • Dancing

Engaging in artistic endeavors provides a sanctuary where emotions find a voice beyond the limitations of language, allowing me to explore and articulate my innermost thoughts and feelings. The process of creating art fosters a sense of accomplishment and self-esteem, as I was able to witness my visions materialize into tangible forms.

Art serves as a mirror reflecting the depths of the human experience, offering insight, perspective, and a pathway toward self-discovery and emotional resilience. Ultimately, by nurturing creativity and self-expression, art becomes a powerful tool for promoting mental well-being and cultivating a sense of inner peace and fulfillment.
