Music is always my go-to for influencing my mood and I’m sure a ton of y’all relate. There’s nothing better than a hype song to either pull you out of a funk or make a good mood even better. And trust me, no one does hype songs better than a community that’s all about self expression and pride. So, as we keep the momentum going past Pride Month 2025, here are eight songs by queer artists that you can always count on to improve your mood:
1. Leave Me Alone” by Renee Rapp
Mother just dropped and not a second too soon. This single teasing Rapp’s new album is definitely the song of the summer (at least in my house) with immaculate vibes. The beat is simple but fun, Rapp’s voice is enticing, and the lyrics perfectly get across what life should be about. Rapp wants to have fun and tells everyone preventing that to step off and that’s exactly what you’ll want to do while you listen. It’s perfect for summer hang outs with your friends- a fun song for a fun time.
2. “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl” by Chappel Roan
Just the intro to this song is hype. Judging a man for his “ugly jeans” is the best way to get a quick hit of self empowerment. And with its fun 80s beat, Chappel’s incredible vocals, and the label of a “super graphic ultra modern girl,” the song makes sure that hit will last its whole duration. Whether you take it as a song of independence or a lesbian anthem, “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl” is the definition of a girl power song and it’s impossible to be in a bad mood when you hear it.
3. “Applause” by Lady Gaga
Like so many Gaga songs, this song will put a smile on anyone’s face. Its early 2010s club vibes will get anyone clapping along and being drawn into the music and Gaga’s “screw the haters” message is perfect to pull you out of your insecurities and onto the dance floor.
4. “Give Me One Reason” by Tracy Chapman
It wouldn’t be a queer music list without a Tracy Chapman song. More fun and upbeat than her other hits, “Give Me One Reason” is the definition of self worth. Chapman knows the treatment she deserves and this gives listeners a reason to do the same. It’s impossible not to be confident when you hear this song and equally impossible not to know your power by the time it’s done.
5. “Make Me Feel” by Janelle Monae
Another song about loving your person, but with a very different tone, “Make Me Feel” is perfect for celebrating queer relationships and self-love. Saying there’s no better feeling than how Monae feels with her person gives us all something to aspire to, either with how our partner treats us or how we treat ourselves. It’s mood boosting, encouraging, and gives any listener a feeling of comfort.
6. “I’m Still Standing” by Elton John
A song that gets at a keystone of pride: resilience. Elton John speaks to the queer experience of feeling like the world is out to get you and surviving it all anyway. He’s still standing and so are you. That’s something to be proud of that will certainly boost your mood.
7. “Caroline” by Brandi Carlisle
By far the most chill song on this list, “Caroline” is perfect for relaxing while still being inspired. It speaks to the power of a deep love – such an important part of the queer experience – and how having the right person in your life can change everything. Nothing will make you feel more grateful for the people that surround you than giving this one a listen.
8. “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen
Starting with a classic, we have the embodiment of joyful freedom. “Don’t stop me ‘cause I’m having a good time” is such a simple sentiment, but it comes with such an important message of embracing the things that make you happy. And with a fun and fast beat, this song is sure to get you on your feet and doing the things that give you joy.
